About the event

Registration will open for 16th annual Girls’ Day @ City Hall on Monday

The 16th Annual Girls’ Day @ City Hall will take place again this year on Thursday, March 26 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The annual event - created by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs and co-hosted by Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa, Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt, Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, and Alderwoman Sharlen P. Moore, seeks to expose hundreds of young women of middle and high school age to strong female role models in political leadership positions as well as careers in public service.

Registration for this year’s Girls’ Day will open Monday, March 2 and will remain open until March 13 or until capacity for the event is reached. Registration is required to attend, and can be accessed online at www.milwaukee.gov/GirlsDay. Those registering as a group are limited to a group size of 20.

The full-day event includes panel discussions, one with women in elective office and one with women in other public service careers, speakers, and opportunities for active engagement and involvement with several public service-oriented organizations and entities focused on young women and led by women. Alderwoman Coggs is encouraging young women across Milwaukee to participate in this year’s event in hopes of inspiring the next generation of leaders.

“When I first created Girls’ Day, I was the only female member on the Common Council. Since then, representation in government has come a long way, but we can always use more women at the table,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “This event is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about careers in government and public service, an

d all those interested should register to ensure they do not miss out.”

As part of Girls’ Day, the Vel Phillips Trailblazer Award will be presented to a woman in the community who embodies the legacy and spirit of Vel Phillips. Additionally, in honor of the late Akuwa Dantzler, longtime 6th District Legislative Aide, at this year’s Girls’ Day, the annual scholarship presented at the event will be renamed the Akuwa Dantzler Girls’ Day @ City Hall Scholarship. Those wanting to make a contribution to the scholarship fund or event can do so by visiting https://city.milwaukee.gov/cityclerk/Give-MKE.
