Introduction
This collection of fee schedules is organized into discipline-specific categories outlining the plan review and permit fees for each project type.
Plan review fees will be assessed by permit techs after a plan submission is made. Plan review fees are required to be paid before plan review begins. Permit fees shall be paid before permits may be issued.
All fees are summarized from the Milwaukee Code of Ordinance (MCO) Chapters 81 and 200. In the event that any conflicts exist, the fees noted in the ordinances will supersede the fees in the following fee schedules.

Plan Examination Fees - This document summarizes the plan exam fees for new commercial buildings and structures, additions, alterations and parking lots adopted in MCO section 200-33. Note: For new commercial buildings and structures, and additions, square footage means the entire area of all principal floors, mezzanines, basements, attics and exterior porches, decks and platforms. Square footage includes all areas that, with future alterations, could be used as finished (habitable or occupiable) areas. It excludes basement crawlspaces (ceiling heights less than 76 inches) and attic areas accessed only by a scuttle or access panel or having a ceiling height of less than 60 inches.
Note: For alterations, the square footage shall be the total affected area. This value may be larger than the “work area” as defined
by SPS 366.0202(2)(c).
Note: For building and structures involving hazardous occupancies, the plan examination fees shall be doubled.
Other Plan Examination Fees
Training And Technology Surcharge | There shall be a training and technology surcharge of 1.6% on each plan examination fee, fee for service, and any other fee charged by the Department of Neighborhood Services |
Structural plans | When submitted separately from the general building plans, the review fee for structural plans for precast concrete, laminated wood, beams, and other pre-manufactured or pre- engineered structural elements is $350 per plan. |
Hazardous Liquid Storage | The fee for the review of flammable and combustible liquid storage system installation, upgrading or stage II vapor recovery plans shall be $350. |
Transmission Towers | The fee for the review of transmission tower plans shall be $425 and shall include the review of plans for buildings accessory to the tower that are submitted at the same time as the tower plans. |
Suppression Systems (Other) | The plan examination fee for a suppression system, other than a sprinkler system, shall be computed at 0.6% of the cost of construction. The minimum fee shall be $60; the maximum fee $5,500. |
Flood Plain Development Plan Review | An additional development plan review fee of $300 shall be charged for new construction, additions and alterations of commercial buildings, structures and parking lots located in a flood plain. |
Signs | The plan examination fee for the construction or alteration of all signs and billboards shall be 0.9% of the cost of signage. The minimum plan examination fee shall be $100. |
Solar PV | The fee for the examination of commercial solar PV building plans shall be $300 per system. |
Priority Plan Review | The fee for a priority plan review, which expedites completion of the plan review in less than the normal processing time after the plan submission is complete and the plan is considered ready for review, shall be 200% |
Plan Examination Extension | The fee for the extension of an approved plan examination shall be 50% of the original plan examination fee, not to exceed $3,300. |
Code Consultation | The fee for code consultation regarding the Commercial Building Code shall be $220 per hour or fraction thereof. |
Increased Fees | Where construction is started, or when a premises is occupied without first obtaining a permit inspected under the jurisdiction of the Department of Neighborhood Services, as required by this code, the fees specified in this section may be quadrupled. |
Plan Examination Fees - Revisions to Previously Approved Plans
All proposed revisions and modifications which are made to construction documents that have previously been granted approval shall be submitted for review. Fees for revisions are based on the table below. Subsequent revisions beyond the first submitted for review may be charged additional fees at a rate of twice the initial fee.

Introduction - This document summarizes the permit fees for commercial buildings adopted in MCO section 200-33. In case of conflict between this document and the MCO, the fees in MCO 200-33 take precedence.

Multi-purpose Piping | Plumbing plan examination is required for multi-purpose piping systems in one- and 2-family dwelling units and manufactured housing regardless of the number of sprinkler heads. The fee for such examination shall be $150 |
Parking Lots, Private Mains, and Storm Sewers | The plan examination fee for each private main or storm sewer serving a new building, addition or parking lot shall be $250. The plan examination fee for storm sewers installed in conjunction with a stormwater management plan shall be $500. |

Introduction - This document summarizes the plan exam and permitting fees for one- and two-family buildings and accessory structures adopted in MCO section 200-33. In case of conflict, MCO 200-33 fees take precedence.
PLAN EXAMINATION FEES
New Construction, Additions, Alterations & Repairs - Fees for the construction of, addition to, or alteration of one- and two-family dwellings shall be computed on the basis of square footage, in accordance with the following table:
New Construction & Additions | $0.25 per sq. ft. (a minimum fee of $175 applies) |

Note: For fee computation purposes, square footage means the entire area of all principal floors, mezzanines, basements, attics and exterior porches, decks and platforms. Note: There shall be no building permit fee for the installation of a solar PV system on one or 2-family dwellings not required to undergo structural reinforcement or alterations.
