A message from Alderwoman Milele Coggs, Feb. 7, 2026, Milwaukee, WI: Yesterday, as the sun warmed the air and a gentle breeze carried the promise of new beginnings, we released a beautiful butterfly. This simple act marked a profound moment of remembrance for Akuwa Dantzler, my longtime legislative assistant and sister-friend, who passed away after a courageous battle with health challenges. Akuwa was more than a colleague; she was a cornerstone of our community and a beacon of kindness and dedication.

Her passing leaves a deep void, but her legacy of service, humility, and quiet leadership continues to inspire us all. This post honors her life, her contributions, and the lasting impact she made on our district and beyond.
A Life of Quiet Strength and Service
Akuwa faced many health challenges throughout her life, yet she never let them define her or slow her down. Instead, she focused on serving others with unwavering commitment. Her strength was not loud or showy; it was steady and dependable, like the foundation of a strong building.
She was thoughtful beyond measure, always remembering birthdays and special moments for those around her. Akuwa never sought recognition or praise. Her humility was one of her most defining traits, matched only by her dedication to the community.
Her work was the backbone of many initiatives that have become beloved traditions in our district. These programs brought people together, created opportunities, and strengthened our community’s fabric.
Building a Chosen Family and Community
Though Akuwa was an only child with a small biological family, she built a chosen family as vast as her heart. She connected with people from all walks of life, creating bonds that went beyond blood ties. This chosen family mourns her deeply, feeling the loss of her radiant smile and kind spirit.
Her ability to bring people together was evident in the collaborative spirit of the 6th District office. She was a trusted thought partner and my right hand, always ready with a helping hand or a thoughtful idea. Her presence was a source of strength for all of us.
Contributions That Shaped Our Community
Akuwa’s fingerprints are on many of the programs and events that have enriched our district. Some of the most notable include:
Girls’ Day @ City Hall
This event empowers young girls by introducing them to leadership and civic engagement. Akuwa’s meticulous planning and passion made this day a highlight for many families.
Bronzeville Week
Celebrating the culture and history of Bronzeville, this week-long event brings the community together through arts, education, and festivities. Akuwa’s organizational skills ensured its success year after year.
MKE Business Now Entrepreneurship Summit
This summit supports local entrepreneurs by providing resources, networking, and inspiration. Akuwa’s dedication helped create a platform that continues to fuel economic growth in our district.
Each of these initiatives reflects her commitment to building a stronger, more connected community. Her work behind the scenes made these events possible and meaningful.
Remembering Akuwa’s Impact on Our Office
The 6th District office has always been a place of collaboration and service. Akuwa was the heart of this team. She was a trusted advisor, a problem solver, and a friend. Losing her feels like losing a cornerstone that held everything together.
Her legacy in the office is not just in the programs she helped create but in the way she inspired all of us to work harder and care more deeply. Her example of quiet leadership and excellence set a standard we strive to uphold every day.
Honoring a Legacy of Service and Excellence
As we grieve, we also celebrate Akuwa’s life and the legacy she leaves behind. Her impact on this office, this city, and on my life will never be forgotten. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone who knew her and who shares in this loss.
Her story reminds us that true leadership is not about recognition but about service, humility, and the willingness to lift others up. Akuwa’s life was a testament to these values.

Remembering Akuwa means continuing the work she cared so deeply about. It means supporting each other, building community, and honoring the quiet leaders among us who make a difference every day.
Let us carry her spirit forward by embracing her example of kindness, dedication, and thoughtful leadership. In doing so, we keep her memory alive and ensure that her contributions continue to shape a better future for all.
